Designated first in 1989 and reaffirmed through renewed protections in 2012, Hetter-Millinger Bruch is classified as an IUCN Category IV Habitat/Species Management Area. Its purpose is the conservation, promotion, and restoration of specific wild plant and animal communities, making it an important component of the lower Rhine riverine and meadow ecosystem network that extends across the border into the Netherlands.
