Illawarra Escarpment State Conservation Area

The Illawarra Escarpment State Conservation Area is a protected landscape west of Wollongong in eastern New South Wales, Australia. It follows the dramatic sandstone cliff line that separates the narrow coastal plain from the elevated Southern Tablelands, forming a long, broken belt of forested escarpment that has been shaped over tens of millions of years. The conservation area is not a single contiguous block of bushland. Instead, it is made up of six separate sections strung along roughly 40 kilometres of escarpment, running from Stanwell Park in the north down to Horsley in the south. This arrangement reflects both the geography of the cliffline and the patchwork of land available for reservation when the area was formally consolidated in 1980. Today, the Illawarra Escarpment is valued as much for recreation as for conservation. It serves as a green backdrop to the Illawarra urban and coastal strip, offering residents and visitors opportunities for bush walking, scenic lookouts, picnicking, camping, bird watching, rock climbing, and horse riding. Its combination of geological antiquity, Aboriginal heritage, and proximity to a major population centre gives it a distinctive place among New South Wales protected areas.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
