Inyo Mountains Wilderness

The Inyo Mountains Wilderness is a large federally designated wilderness area in eastern California, encompassing most of the Inyo Mountains, a short but dramatic fault-block range that separates the Owens Valley from Saline Valley. Stretching roughly 70 miles south-southeast from the southern end of the White Mountains, the range forms the western edge of the Great Basin within the larger Basin and Range Province. The wilderness protects a striking elevation gradient, from low desert scrub near the valley floors up through sagebrush slopes and ultimately to high-elevation bristlecone pine forests near the crest, where Waucoba Mountain rises above 11,000 feet. This dramatic vertical change supports unusually diverse plant communities for an arid mountain environment, including rare endemic species adapted to the range's distinctive limestone soils. The area is recognized both for its ecological importance, including habitat for the endangered Inyo Mountains salamander and desert bighorn sheep, and for its geological significance, as the Inyo Mountains are considered among the best-known exposures of late Proterozoic to Cambrian rock in the United States.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
