Ishi Wilderness

Ishi Wilderness is a federally designated wilderness area in the foothills of northern California, straddling Tehama County within the Sierra/Cascade region. Administered primarily by the U.S. Forest Service as part of the Lassen National Forest, with a small portion managed by the Bureau of Land Management, the wilderness was created by Congress through the California Wilderness Act of 1984. The landscape is defined by east-west running ridges framing rugged river canyons carved by Deer Creek and Mill Creek, with elevations reaching roughly 4,000 feet. The terrain is etched by wind and water, and features basalt outcroppings, caves, and unusual pillar lava formations. The area protects a significant portion of the southernmost Cascade Range foothills, an ecological zone not preserved in this form elsewhere in California. The wilderness takes its name from Ishi, the last known member of the Yahi Yana people, who inhabited this rugged country for thousands of years. Today it is recognized as much for its cultural significance and paleontological and archaeological sensitivity as for its natural character, supporting deer herds, raptors, and a mix of chaparral, oak woodland, and pine forest habitats.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
