Archaeological wonder meets Mediterranean nature in southern Turkey

Karatepe-Aslantaş National Park

Karatepe-Aslantaş National Park is a distinctive protected area in southern Turkey that combines significant archaeological heritage with Mediterranean ecosystems. Established on May 29, 1958, it holds the distinction of being the country's second national park and the site of Turkey's first open-air museum. The park sits in the Kadirli and Düziçi districts of Osmaniye Province, positioned between the foothills of the Taurus Mountains and the Çukurova plains, along the banks of the Aslantaş Dam reservoir created by the Ceyhan River. The park's defining feature is its archaeological significance—a Neo-Hittite walled settlement dating to the 8th century BCE, excavated between 1946 and 1952. The site preserves lion statues (locally called Aslantaş) and the famous Karatepe Bilingual inscriptions, which played a crucial role in deciphering Anatolian hieroglyphs. This dual character—as both a cultural heritage site and a natural protected area—makes Karatepe-Aslantaş uniquely valuable among Turkey's national parks. The terrain ranges from 65 to 538 meters above sea level, featuring slightly rugged topography with several notable hills including Karatepe itself at 538 meters. The landscape supports Mediterranean vegetation including Turkish pine and oak woodlands, maquis scrubland, and planted areas with various ornamental and fruit trees around picnic zones.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
