Lake Ontario National Marine Sanctuary

The Lake Ontario National Marine Sanctuary is a federally protected area in the waters of the United States covering roughly 1,722 square miles of southeastern Lake Ontario and its adjacent New York coastline. Designated NOAA's 16th National Marine Sanctuary in September 2024, it became the third sanctuary on the Great Lakes and the first in New York State waters. The sanctuary safeguards an extraordinary concentration of underwater cultural heritage. Shipwreck explorers had previously identified around 41 historic shipwrecks and one aircraft wreck inside its boundaries, spanning more than 200 years of American history, with additional sites awaiting confirmation. Many of the wrecks are remarkably well preserved because of the cold, fresh lake water. Equally central to the sanctuary's identity is its deep and continuing relationship with the Haudenosaunee Confederacy. The Onondaga, Cayuga, Seneca, Oneida, and Tuscarora peoples have used these waters for transportation, trade, fishing, and ceremony for centuries, and the sanctuary's management reflects a strong commitment to preserving the cultural, spiritual, and historical value of the lake for Indigenous communities.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
