Map protected geography around South Africa’s largest natural freshwater lake

Position Lake Sibaya within KwaZulu-Natal's coastal dune and wetland protected network

Lake Sibaya occupies a broad freshwater basin immediately inland of KwaZulu-Natal's coastal dunes, where shallow water and reed-fringed shore meet sandy Maputaland plain, vegetated dune ridges, dune forest, and grassland. Explore surrounding protected geography on the map while keeping every wetland's status, catchment, shore form, and habitat evidence distinct.

Lake Sibaya

Lake Sibaya is South Africa's largest purely freshwater lake, covering roughly 64 square kilometers along the warm, sandy Maputaland coast of KwaZulu-Natal. Set just inland from the Indian Ocean, the lake is a defining freshwater anchor within the broader iSimangaliso Wetland Park system, a mosaic of coastal lakes, forested dunes, estuaries, and grasslands that has been both a Ramsar Wetland of International Importance and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1999. Despite its modest depth and shallow basins, Lake Sibaya supports an unusually rich freshwater ecosystem. Some 279 bird species have been recorded around its shores, alongside diverse fish populations and the surrounding dune and coastal forest habitats. The lake also supplies domestic water to nearby communities through regional schemes, and its catchment has become an important study site for water-yield research in relation to rainfall cycles and commercial forestry plantings on surrounding lands. Recognized internationally since the early 1990s for its ecological value, Lake Sibaya blends quiet freshwater wilderness with proximity to one of South Africa's most renowned coastal conservation landscapes, offering opportunities for bird-focused exploration, lakeside lodges, and easy access to the beaches and reefs of northern KwaZulu-Natal.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
