Loch Creran Marine Protected Area

Loch Creran is a long, narrow sea loch on the west coast of Scotland, sitting in Argyll and Bute between the districts of Benderloch to the south and Appin to the north. It opens westward into the Lynn of Lorne, a broader arm of Loch Linnhe, with the island of Eriska guarding the entrance. The loch is shaped like a classic Scottish fjord: deep basins alternating with shallow narrows where tidal currents pick up speed. The loch is best known for its marine life, especially the flame shell beds and horse mussel reefs that thrive where accelerated tidal flow keeps the water well oxygenated and rich in nutrients. In recognition of these features and its quaternary geological interest, the entire loch was designated a Nature Conservation Marine Protected Area in 2014, covering approximately 1,200 hectares of seabed. At the head of the sea loch, the freshwater environment of the River Creran meets Glasdrum Wood National Nature Reserve, an internationally important Atlantic oakwood that adds a woodland dimension to the protected area's identity. Together, the marine and woodland habitats make Loch Creran a compact but unusually rich conservation landscape on Scotland's western seaboard.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
