A fjord-like sea loch in Cowal sheltered by the Arrochar Alps

Loch Goil

Loch Goil is a small sea loch on the Cowal peninsula in Argyll and Bute, Scotland. It is a narrow, fjord-like arm of Loch Long, surrounded by steep hills and the rugged peaks of the Arrochar Alps. The entire loch lies within the Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park, making it one of the more sheltered, mountain-framed marine inlets in the Scottish Highlands. The loch is bordered by the village of Lochgoilhead at its head and the small settlement of Carrick Castle on its western shore, both reached by scenic single-track roads through Highland terrain. Beyond its scenic identity, Loch Goil has gained formal ecological recognition: in 2014 it was designated a Nature Conservation Marine Protected Area, acknowledging the importance of its marine habitats. The loch also has a modern strategic role, as it is used for Trident submarine exercises by vessels based at HMNB Clyde at nearby Faslane. Together, its protected status, dramatic Highland setting, and proximity to central Scotland give Loch Goil a distinctive character among Scottish sea lochs.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
