Los Arrayanes National Park

Los Arrayanes National Park is a compact protected area in southwestern Argentina that preserves one of the world\'s most remarkable examples of arrayán forest. The park occupies the Quetrihué Peninsula jutting into Nahuel Huapi Lake in Neuquén Province, a landscape of dramatic beauty where dense vegetation meets glacial waters beneath the shadow of the Andes. The park was established in 1971 specifically to safeguard the rare arrayán trees (Luma apiculata), a species whose cinnamon-colored bark and twisted form creates an almost otherworldly forest environment. Though the park spans only 17.53 square kilometers, its ecological significance is disproportionate to its size, protecting a botanical treasure that exists nowhere else in such concentration. Visitors reach the peninsula by boat from various points along Nahuel Huapi Lake or via a challenging 12-kilometer trail from Villa La Angostura, with wooden boardwalks installed throughout the forest to protect the sensitive root systems of these ancient trees.
