Losiny Ostrov National Park

Losiny Ostrov National Park is one of the largest urban forests in the world, straddling the eastern edge of the city of Moscow and the surrounding Moscow Oblast. Its name, meaning "Elk Island," reflects centuries of use as hunting grounds for Russian princes and tsars, and the park continues to support free-roaming moose, sika deer, wild boar, and a rich variety of smaller mammals and birds amid mixed and broadleaf forests. Designated as a national park in 1983 at the same time as the Sochi National Park, Losiny Ostrov was established to safeguard a forest landscape that had already endured heavy logging during World War II and was under growing urban pressure. Today it combines strict nature reserves, recreational forest parkland, educational sites such as a moose bio-station and an arboretum, and a buffer zone where development is restricted to protect its ecological integrity. The park plays a distinctive dual role: it is both an IUCN Category II protected area of federal importance and a working landscape that millions of Muscovites use for walking, cycling, and nature watching. Its closeness to the metropolis gives Losiny Ostrov an unusual conservation profile, where forest dynamics, wildlife management, and the needs of a dynamic urban region intersect.
