Moutere Ihupuku / Campbell Island Marine Reserve

Moutere Ihupuku / Campbell Island Marine Reserve is a marine reserve encircling Campbell Island in New Zealand's remote Subantarctic Islands, approximately 660 kilometres south of the South Island. Established in 2014, the reserve covers about 39 percent of the territorial sea of the island group and surrounds one of the most biologically significant subantarctic land and seascapes in the Southern Ocean. The reserve protects waters around an eroded shield volcano whose dramatic cliffs, boulder beaches, sheltered inlets, and exposed reefs extend into a remarkable underwater terrain of basalt pinnacles, sponge beds, seaweed-encrusted reefs, boulder fields, and large spider crab populations. Above and below the surface, the area sustains globally important seabird breeding colonies, including the world's largest population of southern royal albatross, alongside rockhopper penguins, New Zealand sea lions, and several species of seals. Managed by the New Zealand Department of Conservation with support from the Royal New Zealand Navy, the reserve reflects New Zealand's commitment to safeguarding some of the most isolated and ecologically distinctive marine territory in the Pacific, while recognizing the cultural connections of Ngāi Tahu to these southern islands.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
