Naturpark Kellerwald-Edersee

Naturpark Kellerwald-Edersee is a large, forest-dominated nature park in the northern German state of Hesse, covering parts of the low mountain range known as the Kellerwald along with the uplands surrounding the Edersee reservoir. Established in 2001 and expanded in 2019, the park protects one of the largest unfragmented beech forest areas in Germany and serves as a broader landscape buffer surrounding the more strictly protected Nationalpark Kellerwald-Edersee, which lies within its boundaries. The park stretches across the districts of Waldeck-Frankenberg and Schwalm-Eder in northern Hesse, southwest of Kassel, reaching from the Edersee in the north to the Oberhessische Schwelle ridge in the south. Within its boundaries lie numerous villages and small towns, two larger lakes, and a network of rivers and streams that drain partly toward the Weser system and partly toward the Rhine system. Combined with its emblematic beech forests, varied mid-mountain relief, and the scenic Edersee lake, the park forms a distinctive landscape mosaic for both conservation and recreation. The Naturpark Kellerwald-Edersee plays an important role in German nature conservation as the setting for the federal Naturschutzgroßprojekt Kellerwald-Region, a long-running large-scale project focused on habitat protection, forest conversion, and ecological restoration. Together with embedded protected areas, long-distance hiking trails, and visitor facilities, it functions as both a working landscape and an accessible nature destination in central Germany.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
