Naturschutzgebiet Piepenbruch

Naturschutzgebiet Piepenbruch is a small nature reserve in the Hochsauerlandkreis, in the German federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia. It lies east of the village of Langscheid within the municipal area of Sundern, on the east-facing valley slope leading down to the Flasmecke stream. Although compact, the reserve protects a type of habitat that has become rare across central German upland landscapes: permanently moist, spring-fed grassland used as pasture. The protected area was formally designated in 2019 as part of the renewed landscape plan for Sundern, ending a long period in which the same ground was simply classified as ordinary countryside. The site is surrounded by the larger Flasmecketal Landscape Protection Area, which provides a broader buffer of less intensively used land around the small core reserve. Together, the two designations reflect an effort to keep a tiny but ecologically valuable grassland fragment intact within a heavily farmed region. Ecologically, Piepenbruch is valued above all for its wet meadow flora, including rushes, marsh marigold, related moisture-loving wildflowers, and several plant species typical of traditional mountain pasture. The reserve is also recognised as a stepping-stone habitat for bird species tied to open wet countryside, and the landscape plan explicitly identifies its importance as a refuge patch in an otherwise intensively used agricultural setting.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
