Ndumo Game Reserve

Ndumo Game Reserve is a small protected area in the far northeastern corner of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, anchored in the Maputaland region at the confluence of the Pongola and Great Usutu rivers on the Mozambique border. Despite its modest size of around 11,000 hectares, the reserve contains an unusually dense mosaic of sand forest, riverine woodland, floodplains, alluvial flats, reed beds, grasslands, broad-leaved and acacia woodlands, and thick thornveld, all shaped by the slow-moving waters and seasonal flooding of the two river systems. The reserve is best known for its wetlands and for the extraordinary richness of its birdlife, with more than 430 species recorded within its boundaries. Maputaland's position at the southern edge of many east and northeast African bird ranges gives the area a zoogeographic edge that birders prize, while the floodplains, pans, and rivers of Ndumo host hippos, crocodiles, fish, and a wide array of other animals. Ndumo is also notable for its complicated history of forced displacement, contested land claims, and ongoing conservation conflict. Established in 1924 primarily to protect hippopotamus populations, it became a Ramsar Wetland of International Importance in 1997, yet has faced illegal fishing, grazing, and cultivation within its declared boundary, raising concerns about the future integrity of this small but ecologically significant reserve.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
