Pointe-de-l'Est National Wildlife Area

The Pointe-de-l'Est National Wildlife Area is a protected coastal reserve located at the northeastern tip of the Magdalen Islands in Quebec, Canada. It safeguards a remarkable complex of sand dunes, barrier-spit beaches, salt marshes, freshwater wetlands, and two large lagoons that together form one of the most important stopover and breeding grounds for migratory birds in Atlantic Canada. The reserve protects habitats used by migratory shorebirds, waterfowl, and nesting terns, including species of conservation concern such as the Piping Plover and the Red-necked Grebe. It sits within the Eastern Island Important Bird Area and shares its boundaries with the adjacent Pointe-de-l'Est Wildlife Refuge, creating a much larger continuous landscape of protected coastal habitat. Beyond its ecological role, the area is notable for being home to one of the largest parabolic dunes in North America, set within a landscape shaped by salt tectonics and marine erosion. Administered by the Canadian Wildlife Service, it functions as a living laboratory for dune ecology, shorebird migration, and island conservation in the Gulf of Saint Lawrence.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
