A Saint John River floodplain sanctuary in central New Brunswick

Portobello Creek National Wildlife Area

Portobello Creek National Wildlife Area is a federally protected wetland complex in south-central New Brunswick, Canada, just east of the provincial capital Fredericton. It lies along Portobello Creek west of Indian Lake and French Lake, and includes a significant portion of the Saint John River floodplain, one of the most extensive wetland systems in the Maritime provinces. The site forms part of the Saint John River Important Bird Area, specifically the Sheffield–Jemseg sector, and is recognized as one of five National Wildlife Areas in New Brunswick. Managed by the Canadian Wildlife Service, it was established in 1995 to conserve habitat for waterbirds and other wetland-dependent species in a region where floodplain ecosystems are increasingly pressured by human activity. The reserve's mosaic of open marshes, shrub swamps, wooded swamps, and floodplain forests supports breeding populations of several bird species of conservation concern. Its proximity to Fredericton, combined with its position within a much larger floodplain landscape, gives the area both ecological value and importance for bird conservation in Atlantic Canada.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
