Pululahua Geobotanical Reserve

Pululahua Geobotanical Reserve is a protected natural area located in the Pichincha Province of Ecuador, roughly 25 kilometers north of Quito near the equatorial monument known as La Mitad del Mundo. The reserve sits inside and along the slopes of the Pululahua volcano, a long-dormant but geologically young Andean stratovolcano whose semi-destroyed caldera forms a remarkable circular basin in the northern highlands. What makes Pululahua especially distinctive is the unusual combination of a working agricultural community living inside the volcanic crater and a protected area of exceptional biological diversity. With a habitat range that stretches from around 1,800 meters at the lower edges up to more than 3,300 meters near the highest domes, the reserve contains a striking vertical sequence of ecosystems, including lower montane cloud forest, mist-shrubland on rocky outcrops, semi-dry mountain scrub, humid mountain shrubland, and high-altitude evergreen forest near the summits. This ecological layering has helped the reserve earn its geobotanical designation. Pululahua stands out in Ecuador's protected-area system for several reasons. It was the country's first national protected area established on the continental mainland, declared in 1966 and later reclassified as a geobotanical reserve in 1978. It also protects important populations of Andean flora and fauna, including endemic plant species, Andean bears, and condors that range across the reserve's varied elevations. Its proximity to the capital makes it one of the most accessible volcanic landscapes in the country.

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
