Historic Lorraine wetland reserve and the first Regional Nature Reserve of France

Réserve naturelle régionale de l'étang d'Amel

The Réserve naturelle régionale de l'étang d'Amel is a Regional Nature Reserve in the Meuse department of the Grand Est region of northeastern France, covering roughly 147 hectares around a former medieval fishpond in the Woëvre plain. It was classified on 30 June 2006 by the Regional Council of Lorraine, making it the first Regional Nature Reserve (Réserve naturelle régionale) ever established under France's regional protection framework. The reserve's core is the Amel pond itself, surrounded by reedbeds, peripheral marshes, and wet meadows. These habitats support a rich community of birds, amphibians, dragonflies, and rare wetland plants, making the site an important refuge within the otherwise heavily farmed Woëvre landscape. Management is led by the Conservatoire d'espaces naturels de Lorraine, which acquired the pond and adjoining meadows in 1998 and built the case for formal protection. Beyond its ecological value, the reserve has a notable cultural pedigree. The pond was first shaped by monks in the 13th century for fish farming, and the reserve today combines conservation, public discovery, and the preservation of a traditional Lorraine wetland.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
