Réserve naturelle régionale des Larris et tourbières de Saint-Pierre-es-Champs

The Réserve naturelle régionale des Larris et tourbières de Saint-Pierre-es-Champs is a small regional nature reserve set in the western part of the Oise département, in the Hauts-de-France region of northern France. It stretches across about seventy-nine hectares on the commune of Saint-Pierre-es-Champs, near the town of Beauvais, and is anchored by the prominent limestone promontory known as the Côte Sainte-Hélène. The reserve was created to safeguard two complementary landscapes that meet on either side of the Côte: open, sun-exposed chalk grasslands on the south-facing slopes, known locally as larris, and cooler, wetter habitats on the shaded side that support peatland, woodland, and sub-montagnard plant communities. Together these habitats shelter a rich fauna and flora, including fourteen orchid species and more than two hundred species of butterflies, many of which are rare or declining elsewhere in northern Europe. Beyond its natural value, the site carries a layered human history. The Côte Sainte-Hélène has been occupied since prehistoric times, hosted chapels and pilgrimages, and was grazed by transhumant sheep until the mid-twentieth century. It is today a working example of how conservation grazing and habitat restoration can revive a threatened semi-natural landscape.
