Réserve naturelle régionale des Prairies du Val de Sambre

The Réserve naturelle régionale des Prairies du Val de Sambre is a small regional nature reserve (RNR) in northern France, located in the Hauts-de-France region within the department of Nord. Classified on 15 October 2012, it covers approximately 49 hectares and lies in the middle Sambre valley, on the right bank of the canalised Sambre, between the communes of Locquignol and Maroilles in the Avesnois area. The protected area focuses on floodplain meadows and associated wetland habitats that have historically shaped the valley's landscape. It is bordered by the large forest of Mormal to the north and the bocage landscape of Thiérache to the south, fitting into a broader mosaic of meadows, woodlands, hedgerows, and water features typical of the Sambre valley. Although modest in size, the reserve is ecologically meaningful because it preserves a fragment of the wet, traditionally mown grasslands that once characterised the Sambre floodplain. Its management is tied into wider conservation efforts in the valley, where the Conservatoire d'espaces naturels des Hauts-de France oversees an even larger area of floodplain meadows reaching about 89 hectares in total.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
