Riverside Mountains Wilderness

Riverside Mountains Wilderness is a Bureau of Land Management protected area in Riverside County, California, set within the Riverside Mountains along the eastern edge of the Colorado Desert. The wilderness lies just west of the Colorado River, which forms its eastern boundary, and sits near the small community of Vidal Junction in the Lower Colorado River Valley region. The protected landscape covers just over 24,000 acres of desert terrain characterized by gently sloping bajadas, steep rugged interiors, and rocky peaks that give the small range a rough, craggy appearance. The area is part of the broader Maria Fold and Thrust Belt, a geologically distinctive region shaped by ancient crustal shortening and later Miocene-age extension that exposed metamorphic core complexes and detachment fault systems. Ecologically, the wilderness supports populations of two sensitive cactus species; the foxtail cactus and California barrel cactus; and hosts a small herd of desert mule deer, known locally as burro deer. The combination of river-bordering desert scenery, rugged mountain geology, and biologically sensitive Sonoran and Colorado Desert habitats gives this wilderness a distinctive identity among California desert preserves.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
