A small prairie pothole reserve in Saskatchewan dedicated to wetland research and waterfowl conservation.

St. Denis National Wildlife Area

St. Denis National Wildlife Area is a small protected reserve located in central Saskatchewan, Canada, in the rural municipality of Grant No. 372 near the village of Saint-Denis. It lies within the Prairie Pothole Region and is defined by a mix of native grasslands, aspen woodlands, saline lowlands, and shallow wetland ponds scattered across a relatively compact landscape. The reserve was established in the late 1960s as an in situ research site, originally focused on understanding how agricultural practices affect the productivity of waterfowl and other wetland-dependent birds. Over time it became a National Wildlife Area in 1978, and it remains unique within the Canadian wildlife protection system for also carrying the English designation of National Research Area. Its combination of research history, prairie ecology, and wetland habitat gives it a distinctive identity among Canada's protected natural areas. Today the area is recognized primarily for its importance to waterfowl breeding populations, native prairie plant communities, and ongoing long-term ecological monitoring. Despite its modest size, the reserve supports a wide variety of birds, mammals, amphibians, and plant communities that reflect both the natural character of the Saskatchewan prairies and the long human history of settlement and agriculture in the region.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
