Syen-Venn

Syen-Venn is a protected nature reserve (Naturschutzgebiet) in Lower Saxony, Germany, located in the Grafschaft Bentheim district between the town of Nordhorn and the municipality of Isterberg. The reserve safeguards a raised bog (Hochmoor) landscape that has been shaped over centuries by drainage and peat cutting, yet still retains ecologically valuable cores of living bog vegetation, bog forest, moor heath, and shallow standing waters. The area has been under formal protection since 1936, making it one of the older mire conservation sites in northwestern Germany. Today it overlaps closely with a designated FFH (Fauna-Flora-Habitat) area, reflecting its importance at the European level for conserving rare bog species, mire plants, amphibians, and a distinctive bird community. Surrounding the reserve is a belt of extensively managed grassland that buffers the core bog from agricultural pressure. Syen-Venn is notable as a place where active regeneration of raised bog vegetation is underway. Restoration measures such as shrub removal have reopened sections of the bog surface, allowing typical high-mire plants, sundews, and bog-pool communities to recover, while the surrounding bog woodland, dominated by birch, continues to support breeding and migratory bird species characteristic of open wetland and moorland habitats.

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
