Tyagarah Nature Reserve

Tyagarah Nature Reserve is a protected coastal reserve in the far north of New South Wales, sitting in the Northern Rivers region between the popular destinations of Byron Bay and Brunswick Heads. It covers roughly 875 hectares of land and ocean-front and shields seven kilometres of largely undeveloped beach and dune landscape from coastal development. The reserve is widely known as a premier land-based spotting point for the eastern Australian humpback whale migration, particularly in the spring months when mothers and calves move southward past the coast on their journey from calving grounds near the Great Barrier Reef toward Antarctic feeding waters. Beyond its scenic coastline, Tyagarah carries strong ecological significance. It safeguards several federally listed endangered ecological communities, including coastal saltmarsh and swamp sclerophyll forest, and hosts a substantial number of threatened plant species. At the same time, the land is the cultural and spiritual home of the Arakwal people and sits within the broader Country of the Bundjalung nation, whose custodianship continues to shape how the reserve is understood and managed today. The reserve also has a distinctive social history: its main beach was long associated with naturist and LGBTQIA+ communities in Australia, becoming a place of freedom and belonging before that status was withdrawn in 2024. Together, the mix of marine and terrestrial habitat, cultural depth, and countercultural heritage makes Tyagarah a layered protected area that combines ecological conservation with a strong sense of place in the Byron Shire.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
