Utwe-Walung Marine Park

Utwe-Walung Marine Park is a conservation area on the island of Kosrae, in the Federated States of Micronesia. It lies within Utwe municipality, in the southern part of the island, and protects an interconnected landscape of fringing coral reef, mangrove forests, and interior tropical rainforest that sweeps from the shoreline up into the highlands of Kosrae's rugged interior. The park is widely recognized for its exceptionally healthy hard corals and for some of the most pristine forest and mangrove systems remaining in Micronesia. Beyond its ecological value, the reserve reflects a strong local effort to safeguard traditional land and seascapes, combining marine protection, inland habitat conservation, and community-based eco-tourism. Utwe-Walung stands out as a model of grassroots island conservation. It was established through the efforts of a local ecologist, who helped redirect development pressures into sustainable eco-tourism and worked with elders to preserve traditional Kosraean building practices. The park today serves as both a natural refuge and a cultural anchor for the southern communities of Kosrae.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
