Václavovice, Pískovna

Václavovice – Pískovna is a small natural monument (přírodní památka) in the Moravian-Silesian Region of the Czech Republic, located on the border of the town of Šenov and the village of Václavovice, roughly ten kilometers southeast of Ostrava. The protected site centers on a former sand quarry that has since been recolonized by water, woodland, and wetland vegetation, creating valuable breeding habitat for amphibians. The area is registered as a European Important Site within the Natura 2000 network, with its formal protection primarily aimed at safeguarding a strong population of the great crested newt (Triturus cristatus). Surrounding habitats of alder woodland, wet shores, and reed vegetation extend the site's value for several other amphibian species as well. Although compact in size at less than seven hectares, the site is a meaningful local stronghold for amphibian diversity within the heavily urbanized Ostrava-město district and reflects how former industrial extraction sites can develop into important secondary habitats.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
