Wirrimbirra Sanctuary

Wirrimbirra Sanctuary is a heritage-listed flora and fauna sanctuary located in outer southwestern Sydney, near the village of Bargo in New South Wales, Australia. It preserves one of the last remaining tracts of the original Bargo Bush, a woodland landscape that once stretched extensively south of Sydney and is historically significant as the place where European settlers made the earliest recorded sightings of the koala and the lyrebird. The property covers about 95 hectares on the flat plateau of the Bargo area and is owned by the National Trust of Australia (NSW). Beyond its conservation role, the sanctuary functions as a native plant nursery, a field studies centre, and a long-established hub for environmental education, hosting thousands of native plants across more than forty curated gardens. Wirrimbirra holds a special place in Australian conservation history. It was established in the early 1960s through the efforts of the David G. Stead Memorial Wildlife Research Foundation and was added to the New South Wales State Heritage Register in 2002 in recognition of its ecological, educational, and historical importance.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
