Żerkowice-Skała

Żerkowice-Skała is a small Natura 2000 site of community importance in southwestern Poland, set within the Pogórze Izerskie (Izera Foothills) of Lower Silesian Voivodeship. It lies in the rural commune of Lwówek Śląski, on a forested sandstone cuesta between the villages of Żerkowice and Skała, with two large sandstone quarries operating just to the north. The area is valued mainly for its collegate deciduous forests, its dramatic sandstone rock formations, and its significance for the rare filmy fern Trichomanes speciosum. The site forms part of Poland's Natura 2000 network and is designated as a proposed Special Area of Conservation targeting habitat types. Its compact footprint combines an edge of sandstone cuestas with numerous outlier rocks, well-preserved oak-hornbeam and elm-ash forest communities, and silicate cliff and scree habitats that together support a high concentration of conservation interest. Beyond its ecological role, Żerkowice-Skała is also a local point of interest for hikers following the green trail that runs from Bolesławiec through Lwówek Śląski. Together with nearby features such as Skała z Medalionem, Szwajcaria Lwówecka, and the surrounding rock groups, it fits into a broader regional landscape sometimes referred to as the Lwówek Switzerland, where sandstone scenery dominates.
