Zwin

The Zwin is a nature reserve straddling the Belgian-Dutch border at the North Sea coast, representing the remnants of a once-major medieval tidal inlet. Originally formed by a storm in 1134, the Zwin channel extended approximately 15 kilometers inland and connected the North Sea with the historic port cities of Sluis and Bruges, enabling Bruges to rise as one of Europe's foremost medieval trading centers. Progressive silting from the late 13th century gradually rendered the waterway unusable by around 1500, ending Bruges' status as a seaport and shifting trade dominance to Antwerp. Today the protected area encompasses roughly 1.58 square kilometers of coastal wetland, comprising salt marshes, mudflats, beaches, and dunes that support distinctive salt-resistant plant communities. The reserve was established in 1986 as a Ramsar Wetland of International Importance and remains a celebrated destination for birdwatchers, featuring a small zoo with domestic birds and one of the few Belgian populations of white storks.
