Allonby Bay

Allonby Bay is a crescent-shaped inlet of the Solway Firth on the north-western coast of Cumbria, in north-west England. Stretching roughly 5.5 miles along the shoreline, the bay runs from Dubmill in the north, near the village of Mawbray and the hamlet of Salta, down to its southern end just north of Maryport. The shoreline is followed closely by the B5300 coast road, which links Silloth in the north with Maryport in the south, and the village of Allonby sits roughly at the midpoint of the bay. The bay is much more than a stretch of beach. It lies within the Solway Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and the surrounding coastline includes protected saltmarsh, dune systems, and the ecologically important Salta Moss, a Site of Special Scientific Interest. In 2016, Allonby Bay was designated a Marine Conservation Zone, and in 2023 it became one of England's first Highly Protected Marine Areas, recognising the importance of its subtidal sediments, honeycomb worm reefs, and spawning grounds for flatfish and rays. Above the tideline, the bay carries a deep archaeological and cultural footprint, from Neolithic settlement traces and Bronze Age metalwork finds to a chain of Roman milefortlets that once extended the defences of Hadrian's Wall along the Solway shore. The long history of human presence, combined with its scenic dunes, saltmarshes, and sweeping views across the Irish Sea, gives Allonby Bay a distinctive character that blends natural beauty, wildlife interest, and deep historical layers.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
