Laguna Garzon Protected Habitat and Species Management Area

Laguna Garzon Protected Habitat and Species Management Area is a coastal protected area in southeastern Uruguay, centered on the Laguna Garzon lagoon system. It straddles the border between the departments of Maldonado and Rocha, near the resort village of Jose Ignacio and within reach of the coastal town of La Paloma. The area combines a network of linked coastal lagoons, surrounding rural land, and a sector of the Atlantic Ocean extending seaward. The protected area was created in 2014 under Uruguay's National System of Natural Protected Areas, more than three decades after the lagoon first received some form of recognition through a broader lacustrine park. Its designation focuses on habitat and species management, reflecting the ecological importance of the lagoon complex and its associated dune environments along Uruguay's Atlantic coast. Today the area forms part of Uruguay's framework of recognized natural protected areas, contributing to the conservation of one of the most distinctive coastal wetland and lagoon landscapes in the country. It sits within a broader coastal mosaic that includes other well-known Uruguayan lagoons and dune systems further east along the Rocha shoreline.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
