Ashepoo Combahee Edisto Basin National Estuarine Research Reserve

The Ashepoo Combahee Edisto Basin National Estuarine Research Reserve is a large estuarine reserve on the Atlantic coast of South Carolina, covering approximately 140,000 acres within the broader ACE Basin. The ACE Basin is one of the largest undeveloped estuarine complexes remaining on the United States eastern seaboard, formed where three rivers meet the biologically rich waters of St. Helena Sound. The reserve is named for the Ashepoo, Combahee, and Edisto Rivers, which wind through cypress swamps, tidal marshes, historic plantation landscapes, and former rice fields before emptying into the Atlantic. It exists to safeguard the natural environment, wildlife, and cultural heritage of this coastal region, including the habitat of several endangered and threatened species. In addition to conservation, the reserve supports ongoing scientific research, water-quality monitoring, and education for decision makers, students, and the public. Commercial fishing for shrimp, crab, oyster, clam, and finfish remains an important regional activity within the basin, and the reserve works to balance that resource use with long-term ecosystem protection.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
