Black Rock Conservation Park

Black Rock Conservation Park is a small protected area in the mid-north of South Australia, situated in the locality of Erskine roughly 250 kilometres north of Adelaide and about 25 kilometres east of Orroroo. The park sits on the outwash plain surrounding Black Rock, the highest point in its immediate vicinity, and protects a representative patch of regional vegetation that has otherwise been heavily modified by grazing. The conservation park is valued primarily for preserving vegetation typical of the area, a habitat mosaic dominated by low woodland of Casuarina species together with Eucalyptus, Myoporum, and a chenopod understorey. It also supports a diverse avifauna and has ornithological significance, notably as the locality of the most westerly historical record of the black-backed wren. Although compact at about 119 hectares, the park has been recognised for its ecological and conservation value since the late twentieth century and is classified internationally as an IUCN Category III protected area.
