Bon Bon Reserve

Bon Bon Reserve is a large private protected area in the arid interior of South Australia, sitting west of Roxby Downs within the wider Woomera Prohibited Area. Covering roughly 2,164 square kilometres, the reserve is owned and managed by Bush Heritage Australia and forms part of the Australian National Reserve System, classified as an IUCN Category II protected area. Its establishment closed a significant gap between the Yellabinna Regional Reserve and the Wabma Kadarbu Mound Springs Conservation Park, creating a more continuous corridor of conserved land across the South Australian outback. The landscape is defined by classic central Australian landforms: extensive mulga woodlands, bluebush plains, scattered salt lake systems, and at its centre, the large ephemeral wetland of Lake Puckridge. The reserve is an important habitat for arid-adapted wildlife, including several threatened species such as the plains-wanderer and the southern hairy-nosed wombat, and provides refuge for many of the plant communities that characterise this part of the continent. Bon Bon Reserve represents a transition from a long pastoral history to a conservation-focused future. Once a working sheep station for around 150 years, the property was acquired in 2008 and is now managed in perpetuity for biodiversity, making it both an ecologically and historically significant component of South Australia's protected area estate.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
