Bullwaddy Conservation Reserve

Bullwaddy Conservation Reserve is a protected area in the Northern Territory of Australia, set on the vast Sturt Plateau roughly 120 kilometres north east of the small town of Elliott. Classified as an IUCN Category Ia strict nature reserve, it covers around 115 square kilometres of semi-arid tropical woodland country in the Australian outback. The reserve was established in 2000 and is managed by the Parks and Wildlife Commission of the Northern Territory. The defining feature of Bullwaddy Conservation Reserve is its extensive stands of bullwaddy, a tough, drought-adapted tree that gives the protected area both its name and its identity, alongside associated lancewood (Acacia) woodlands. The surrounding land surface consists of shallow, infertile lateritic soils typical of the Sturt Plateau, which limit agricultural use but support a distinctive and relatively intact native plant community. The reserve is bordered by large cattle stations, including Amungee Mungee to the north, south and west and Tanumbirini to the east, with the Carpentaria Highway running along its northern edge. Within this remote pastoral landscape, the reserve provides a refuge for native wildlife and a recognised cultural estate of the Alawa and Jingili traditional owners.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
