Connells Lagoon Conservation Reserve

Connells Lagoon Conservation Reserve, also known by its Aboriginal name Dalgajini, is a protected area located in the Northern Territory of Australia. It lies in the middle of the Barkly Tableland, roughly 260 kilometres north east of Tennant Creek and 350 kilometres south east of Elliott, on the eastern boundary of Brunette Downs Station. The reserve was established primarily to conserve Mitchell grassland communities, one of the most important tropical grassland systems in northern Australia. The landscape is predominantly flat, with cracking black soil plains underlain by Middle Cambrian Camooweal dolomite, and only modest topographic variation across the reserve. Small tree stands line the watercourses in the northern sections, while bluebush appears in the wettest depressions. The lagoon from which the reserve takes its name sits just outside the boundary fence, yet the reserve itself protects a representative sample of one of the Barkly Tableland's most ecologically significant grassland landscapes. The area holds considerable cultural value for the Wambaya people, the traditional owners of the land, who identify it as part of the broader Rumburriya semi-moiety country known as Mangurinji. Ancestral beings known as Mangaya feature prominently in Wambaya Dreamtime narratives associated with features across the reserve. Since the area was gazetted and fenced in 1984, cattle and wildfire have been excluded, allowing the Mitchell grasslands to recover and persist in a largely intact condition.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
