East Carpathian Biosphere Reserve

The East Carpathian Biosphere Reserve is a UNESCO-designated transboundary protected area that spans the Bieszczady mountain region across Poland, Slovakia, and Ukraine. Established in 1992 under the UNESCO Man and the Biosphere programme, it was the first biosphere reserve anywhere in the world created jointly by three countries, marking a pioneering example of international cooperation for nature conservation. The reserve brings together national parks and landscape parks from all three nations into a single coordinated conservation framework. These include the Bieszczady National Park in Poland, the Poloniny National Park in Slovakia, and the Uzhanskyi National Nature Park in Ukraine, together with surrounding buffer and transition zones. Within this mosaic of protected zones, the reserve preserves extensive Carpathian forests, mountain meadows, and river valleys typical of the eastern arc of the Carpathians. Beyond its conservation role, the East Carpathian Biosphere Reserve is recognized for its significance in protecting large, contiguous tracts of relatively undisturbed European forest ecosystems. The Bieszczady and Poloniny parks were awarded the European Diploma of Protected Areas by the Council of Europe in 1998, underscoring the international standing of the landscapes and ecological values the reserve represents.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
