Great Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve

The Great Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve protects a remarkable mosaic of land and water along Great Bay, a major tidal estuary in southeastern New Hampshire. The reserve's 10,235 acres combine open estuarine waters, fringing salt marshes, rocky shores, coastal bluffs, woodlands, open fields, and the tidal stretches of several river systems, offering a vivid example of how freshwater and saltwater ecosystems blend along the northeastern coast of the United States. Designated in 1989 as part of the National Estuarine Research Reserve System administered by NOAA, the reserve is managed by the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department through its Marine Fisheries Division. Its primary purpose is to promote the wise use and management of the Great Bay estuary, balancing research, education, and conservation across a watershed shaped by centuries of human activity. Great Bay carries deep cultural roots as well. It served as the first major commercial waterway developed by early European settlers in the region, and the reserve continues to interpret that layered local history through exhibits, working replicas, and shoreline trails at the Great Bay Discovery Center.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
