Helpensteiner Bachtal, oberes Schaagbachtal und Petersholz

Helpensteiner Bachtal, oberes Schaagbachtal und Petersholz is a designated nature reserve on the territory of the town of Wegberg in the Heinsberg district of North Rhine-Westphalia, in western Germany. The roughly 693 hectare area extends west of Wegberg's core town, south of the Dalheim district and north of Vossem, the latter belonging to the town of Erkelenz. It follows the courses of the Helpensteiner Bach and the Schaagbach, with the federal highway B 221 cutting through the area and the Dutch state border running along its northwestern edge. The reserve was placed under protection in 1985 under the designation HS-005 and protects an unusually varied cultural and ecological landscape for this part of the Lower Rhine region. It combines large heathlands, nutrient-poor sandy grasslands, marshy brook valleys, alder swamp forests, near-natural oak and beech woodlands, and small ponds along the Helpensteiner and Schaagbach streams. A disused railway line adds a warm, dry, linear habitat element cutting through the otherwise wet and forested landscape. The area is significant both for the conservation of rare plant communities such as royal fern and sundew-related wetland flora, and for animal life including the sand lizard, kingfisher, and a diverse amphibian fauna breeding in its ponds and pools. As one of several protected areas in the Heinsberg district, it represents an important node of the regional ecological network near the German-Dutch border.

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
