Illamurta Springs Conservation Reserve

Illamurta Springs Conservation Reserve is a small protected area in the Northern Territory of Australia, set in the arid heart of central Australia and centred on a permanent spring at the southern foothills of the James Range. The reserve lies in the locality of Ghan, roughly 42 kilometres south of Hermannsburg and about 140 kilometres west of Alice Springs, placing it in the remote country between the MacDonnell Ranges and the great sand and salt landscapes of the interior. Although the reserve covers only about 1.29 square kilometres, it carries meaningful environmental, cultural, and historical weight. The spring supports an enduring oasis of vegetation in an otherwise dry landscape, while the surrounding country is rich in Western Arrente heritage, including artefacts and Dreamtime storylines tied to the area. The site also preserves the ruins of an early police outpost, making it a rare convergence of natural refuge, Indigenous cultural landscape, and colonial-era frontier history. The reserve is managed by the Parks and Wildlife Commission of the Northern Territory and has been recognised for its heritage values through listings on the Register of the National Estate and the Northern Territory Heritage Register.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
