Karte Conservation Park

Karte Conservation Park is a small protected area in the south-eastern part of South Australia, situated in the localities of Karte and Parilla, roughly 193 kilometres east of Adelaide and about 26 kilometres north-west of the town of Pinnaroo. The park lies in the semi-arid mallee country that characterises this corner of the state, where deep sandy soils support a distinctive low-tree ecosystem rather than the open grasslands or tall eucalypt forests found elsewhere in South Australia. The conservation park is built around a concentrated block of steep, irregular sand dunes that carry very mature mallee vegetation. Its defining ecological character is the tall, dense stand of ridge-fruited mallee eucalypts that dominates the dune country, accompanied by melaleuca and native cypress. Because the area has been only minimally disturbed by surrounding land use, it retains an unusually intact example of this kind of vegetation mosaic in a region otherwise shaped by agriculture. Karte Conservation Park is particularly valued for the habitat it provides to mallee-dependent wildlife, including the threatened mallee fowl. The park's protected status is reinforced by its classification as a strict nature reserve under international guidelines, reflecting its role as a refuge for the ecological communities of the southern Australian mallee rather than as a general recreation destination.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
