Kulykol

Kulykol (Қулыкөл in Kazakh) is a large, shallow, bitter-salty lake in the Kamysty District of Kostanay Province in northern Kazakhstan, set within the open steppe of the Tobil (Tobol) river basin. With a surface area of roughly 33 square kilometers and gentle dimensions of about 10 by 5 kilometers, the lake forms broad, calm open water bordered by reed and cane beds that extend well into the shoreline. The lake's name translates from Kazakh as "swan lake," reflecting its long-standing importance as a gathering place for waterfowl; the shores and surrounding wetlands serve as nesting, migration, and molting habitat for a wide range of waterbirds. Along with the neighboring Taldykol and other small lakes, Kulykol forms part of the broader Kulykol-Taldykol lake system, which was designated a Wetland of International Importance under the Ramsar Convention in 2009. Today, Kulykol is valued less as a tourist landmark than as a significant piece of Kazakhstan's natural heritage: a remote steppe wetland whose quiet waters, salt-influenced chemistry, and dense reed cover sustain one of the country's most important bird habitats on the migratory routes of the Kazakh steppe.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
