Map protected geography around a historic artificial wetland in central Mexico

Compare protected-area geography around Lake Yuriria across Guanajuato's volcanic landscape

Lake Yuriria fills a historic artificial basin within Mexico's Mesa Central and Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt, combining shallow water, an irregular shore, tule and reed marsh, islands, volcanic slopes, Bajío dry forest, and agricultural plain. The nearby map locates Guanajuato protected records while keeping their wetland origins, Ramsar status, and landscapes independent.

Lake Yuriria

Lake Yuriria is a historic artificial wetland located in the southern part of Guanajuato state in central Mexico, within the broader Lerma River basin. Created in 1548 by diverting water from the Lerma through the Taramatacheo canal, it stands among the earliest major hydraulic engineering works of colonial America and remains a critical source of irrigation for surrounding farmland. The lake covers roughly 80 square kilometers of surface water and sits at about 1,730 meters above sea level on a volcanic terrain originally shaped as a low-lying marshland. Its shallow, nutrient-rich waters support extensive tule and reed beds, and the broader shoreline region functions as a generator and regulator of local microclimate within a generally semi-arid setting. Beyond its role in agriculture, Lake Yuriria is recognized internationally for its ecological value. It hosts more than 140 recorded bird species, including many migratory waterfowl and shorebirds, and serves as a stopover site along migratory routes crossing central Mexico. The lake's protected status, including Ramsar designation, reflects its outstanding importance as a freshwater wetland.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
