Karst limestone plateau, mangrove forests, and endemic wildlife on the Dominican Republic's remote northeast coast

Los Haitises National Park

Los Haitises National Park is a protected area located on the remote northeast coast of the Dominican Republic, encompassing a dramatic landscape of limestone karst topography, dense mangrove forests, and subtropical humid forests. Established in 1976 and expanded to 826 square kilometers in 1996, the park spans three provinces: Hato Mayor, Monte Plata, and Samaná. The park's defining feature is its karst plateau with dense clusters of conical hills ranging from 200 to 300 meters in height, interspersed with numerous sinkholes and caverns. A large coastal mangrove system dominates the lower elevations, while the interior supports diverse broadleaf forest communities. The area receives approximately 2,000 millimeters of annual precipitation, making it one of the wettest locations in the Dominican Republic. Los Haitises harbors significant biodiversity, including several endemic species threatened with extinction, and contains archaeological sites with pictograms and petroglyphs left by pre-Columbian cultures.
