Mark Twain National Forest

Mark Twain National Forest is the United States' only National Forest located entirely within Missouri, occupying large portions of the southern half of the state. Composed of nine disconnected parcels, it covers roughly 1.5 million acres within the Ozark Highlands, an ancient, unglaciated landscape of rocky glades, large springs, caves, old volcanic mountains, and nationally recognized streams. The forest is named after Mark Twain, the Missouri-born author, and was created by presidential proclamation in 1939 in response to widespread logging of the region's native oak, hickory, and pine forests during the 19th and early 20th centuries. Today it is a patchwork of public and private land managed for conservation, recreation, and timber, and it spans more counties than any other National Forest in the country.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
