A peatland reserve protecting a raised bog and boggy pine forest in the Romincka Forest

Mechacz Wielki Nature Reserve

Mechacz Wielki Nature Reserve is a peatland nature reserve in northeastern Poland, situated in the Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship within the Gołdap commune and the Gołdap forest district. It lies in the heart of the Romincka Forest, a large forested area near the Lithuanian border, and forms part of the broader Romincka Forest Landscape Park. The reserve was created in 1974 to safeguard a representative example of the region's wetland heritage. The protected area covers roughly 147 hectares and centers on a raised bog, a type of peatland that forms in cool, rain-fed conditions and accumulates thick layers of Sphagnum peat over time. Around the bog, the reserve also preserves boggy pine forest, swampy spruce stands, and alder carrs, creating a continuous gradient from open peatland to forested wetland. The combination of habitats makes the reserve an important refuge for mosses, sedges, dwarf shrubs, and several rare plant species typical of northern European peatlands. Ecologically, Mechacz Wielki stands out as one of the more characteristic raised bog landscapes of the Romincka Forest. Its mix of Sphagnum communities, cotton grass, cranberry, and bog rosemary, together with stunted pines and scattered spruce, gives the reserve a distinctive northern, almost sub-boreal atmosphere. The site is valued above all for the integrity of its peat-forming processes and the plant communities that depend on them.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
