Moana Uta (Wet Jacket Arm) Marine Reserve

Moana Uta (Wet Jacket Arm) Marine Reserve is a New Zealand marine reserve that stretches the entire length of Wet Jacket Arm, a long, narrow fiord tucked into the southwestern coastline of Fiordland on the South Island. Established in 2005 and administered by the New Zealand Department of Conservation, the reserve covers around 2,007 hectares of sheltered water between Entry Island and the head of the sound. The fiord's defining feature is its layered underwater environment. Heavy rainfall runoff from the steep surrounding mountains creates a permanent freshwater cap on top of the seawater, beneath which lies a layer of calm, clear, relatively warm water rich in sponges, corals, red and black coral communities, and reef fish. Below that, deeply tannin-stained water too dark to support most marine life descends to hundreds of metres. This unusual stratification supports the highest density of black coral recorded anywhere in Fiordland. The reserve sits within one of the most iconic and remote natural landscapes in the Southern Hemisphere, where towering forested cliffs drop directly into deep, quiet water. Its protection reflects both the ecological peculiarity of Fiordland's fiords and a coordinated effort by the Fiordland Marine Guardians, the Department of Conservation, and mana whenua to safeguard these remarkable marine systems from fishing pressure, invasive species, and physical disturbance.

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
