Nemunas Delta Regional Park

Nemunas Delta Regional Park protects the low-lying mosaic of channels, polders, floodplains, and islands that form where the Nemunas (Neman) River reaches the Curonian Lagoon and the Baltic Sea. Located in western Lithuania, in the Šilutė district, the park straddles one of the lowest stretches of the Baltic coastal lowland, with most of the terrain sitting only a few meters above sea level. The region is defined by water: a maze of distributaries, oxbows, canals, and seasonally flooded meadows weaves through a patchwork of islands, with Rusnė Island at the center. This wetland system is recognized internationally, having been listed under the Ramsar Convention in 1993 for its global importance to waterbirds and wetland ecology. The park is best known as Lithuania's most important staging area for migratory birds and as a stronghold for breeding populations of several internationally rare species. Long-running ornithological research, including the historic bird ringing station at Ventė Cape established in 1929, has made the delta a landmark site for European bird science as well as a popular destination for nature-based tourism.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
