A freshwater Great Lakes estuary where river, marsh, and open lake meet in northern Ohio.

Old Woman Creek National Estuarine Research Reserve

Old Woman Creek National Estuarine Research Reserve is a federally designated protected estuary on the south-central shore of Lake Erie in northern Ohio. At roughly 573 acres, it is the smallest reserve in the National Estuarine Research Reserve System and one of only two Great Lakes freshwater estuaries within that system, making it an unusually compact but ecologically distinctive site. The reserve protects a nearly intact freshwater estuary where Old Woman Creek flows into Lake Erie, surrounded by freshwater marsh, swamp forest, upland oak-hickory woodland, and a narrow barrier beach. Habitats support aquatic vegetation, fish, amphibians, and large numbers of resident and migratory birds, making the site important for both biodiversity and waterfowl. Managed jointly by NOAA and the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, the reserve combines long-term ecological monitoring, education, and stewardship. In a region where the vast majority of Ohio's original coastal wetlands have been drained or developed, Old Woman Creek remains one of the last naturally functioning Great Lakes estuaries and serves as a key reference site for understanding freshwater estuarine systems.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
